Overview


Journey to Life is a smaller Metroidvania game where the player is a villain who got defeated by the heroes and got sent to the underworld.

The villain decided to try to get back up to the living world and try again. For this he has to go through the dangers and monsters of the underworld and come out with his soul intact.


I worked on this project as a game designer, narrative designer, illustrator and level designer. This was a project to make any game we wanted, and I worked in a trio.

Designing the narrative


I learned how to design a narrative for a game that won't have much in text and won't be fully linear. I learned how to manage a small team during brainstorming and how to sift through a lot of ideas to get to a narrative that the player can be interested in, but not too overcomplicated. I wrote the story with player progression and beats.

Illustrating and level design

I learnt how to translate inspiration into and actual visual style that can also be a part of the narrative. I learnt to make assets for Unity and how to put them together into a level. I illustrated the environment including tiles, wall and ceiling panels, props and platforms. I learnt how to assemble a level with parallax background, colliders and lighting.

Result


I improved my skills in writing a narrative, Unity, my skills in asset creation and level design. The people playing the final version of our game gave the feedback that they enjoyed it and the visual style really brought them into the mood for the game.
