Fallen Down

Overview

Fallen Down is a social deduction board game based on the game Undertale.

You and your friends play as humans fallen down into the Underground among the strange monsters. Some of these monsters may want to harm you and others who just want to help. Together you must go through this world and get back to above, but how you go through depends on you. Not everyone’s goal is the same and at the end only that escape who met their goal. So, remember, trust is fragile and determination decides fate.

I worked on this project as a game designer focusing on adapting the original game and be as close to it as possible while making a social deduction game. This was an assignment where we chose a game, got a randomized board game genre, and had to adapt the game into that kind of board game. (Our game was Undertale and our genre was social deduction game.)

My contribution and what I’ve learnt

Designing the game combat based on Undertale

I learned how identify core values of a game and how to translate them to not get lost, but be implemented in a different way. How to create and then refine a combat system that is easily understandable, but unique. I combined the social deduction game's characteristics with Undertale's aesthetic.

Designing the player alignments and balancing

I learned how to rewrite an already existing narrative to fit a slightly different genre of game. I rewrote Undertale's endings and changed them into the alignments of the players which is part of the mechanics of the social deduction game.
I learned how to balance mechanics with players and how to make small or big adjustments to make the game easier or harder, or how to prompt players to act in a certain way. I made the combat harder and added in more ability cards to prompt players to use them more.

Result

I improved game designer basics and gained experience in player testing and iterating on those test results. The players playing the final version of our game enjoyed it and had fun. Our game also won the little award of being the board game most like the video game it was based on.
