The Dragon’s Quest
The Dragon’s Quest
Overview
The Dragon’s Quest is a choose-your-own adventure game.
On this adventure the player can choose where the story should go after a little dragon’s mother is tragically killed. You just want everyone to leave the little dragon and his sister alone? Amazing. You want him to enact glorious vengeance upon those who have wronged them? You have the opportunity!
This was a personal project I worked on as the sole designer, writer, illustrator and coder.

My contributions and what I’ve learnt
Designing the game
I learned how to design a game structure that will help the narrative, but not overcomplicate the implementation. For the choose-your-own-adventure game, I paid attention to my scope and designed a system of 8-s where the story branches out and then back into the start of the next section. This causes some overlap in the pathways, but allows for a lot of different playthroughs.

Writing the story
I learned how to write scenes and how to manage multiple scenarios, with writing five chapters with two big choices and a few smaller ones per chapter. The chapters branch out with a big choice, those branch out with smaller choices and all of it branches back to the start of the next chapter. I learned to manage story branches and how to keep the branchings in-and-out for a narrative standpoint.
In total I wrote 4-5 big choices and another 6-7 smaller ones and it branches out into 4 different endings.

llustrating the scenes
I learned to design characters from my writing and how to keep a character consistent throughout multiple illustrations. I learned to illustrate specific scenes and how to make a style that would allow me to draw fast. In three weeks I made around 50 illustrations from which I used 45.

Coding the game
I put together the game as a website on my university-provided domain with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Result
I improved my skills in designing and writing a narrative, and my skills in digital illustration. I tested this game with my peers and also with a few friends and the overall review was very positive, with one of my very dramatic friends sending me a message in caps lock “OMG THIS IS AWESOME” after playing it.
