Dragon’s Blood Murder

Dragon’s Blood Murder

Overview

The Dragon’s Blood Murder is a point-and-click style murder mystery game where the player has to figure out which of the four suspects killed the victim, a renowned painter from the fictional town of Hallowick.

You play as the detective and has to sort through the victim’s desk, collect evidence from her studio and draw you conclusions on which of the four suspects could have been the killer.

I worked on this project as the sole game designer, writer and illustrator. I made this game to be the frame for my schoolwork and contain my assignments and materials. My teachers assessed my work by playing this game.

My contribution and what I’ve learnt

Writing the narrative

I have written a mystery before, for scout events for children aged 14-18, but now I learnt how to write them for a more mature target audience. I wrote a loose narrative with the suspects as the main focus and wrote as much evidence for them as possible. These evidence then would be the clues for the player to figure out the mystery.

Designing the game framework

I learnt how to design a game and narrative where I can't know what order will it be played. I separated the main storypoints, the evidence into separate rooms where there is no linear path after the introductiory message. The game also doesn't have time limit, the player can go through as little or as many evidence as they want in order to get their solution.

Illustrating the game

I learned how illustrate in a different style than I'm used to. I learnt how to give my game a distinct visual style that conveys the tone and adds to the narrative. I illustrated the backgrounds, the evidence and other props.

Result

I improved my narrative design and writing skills, my skills in digital illustration and asset creation, Figma, and subtle storytelling. With this game I can’t really speak of player test results, because the players were my teachers and they were assessing my work while playing and deciding if I should pass or not. In the end I passed the semester, so I have to assume they liked the game.
